Maternity Self-Care: Looking After Yourself During Pregnancy

Pregnancy is one of the most transformative experiences in a woman's life. Taking care of yourself during this time isn't selfish β€” it's essential for both you and your baby.

    Nutrition During Pregnancy

First trimester: Focus on folate, small frequent meals (for nausea), and staying hydrated. Don't worry if appetite is low β€” the baby's needs are tiny at this stage.

Second trimester: Your calorie needs increase by about 340 calories daily. Focus on iron, calcium, and protein.

Third trimester: You need about 450 extra calories daily. Omega-3 fatty acids are crucial for baby's brain development.

Foods to avoid: Raw or undercooked meat, unpasteurised dairy, high-mercury fish, and excessive caffeine.

    Exercise in Pregnancy

    Staying active during pregnancy:

    • Reduces back pain and swelling
    • Improves sleep and mood
    • Helps prepare for labour
    • Reduces risk of gestational diabetes

Safe activities: Walking, swimming, prenatal yoga, stationary cycling, and light strength training.

Stop exercising and consult your doctor if: You experience bleeding, dizziness, chest pain, or regular contractions.

    Mental Health Matters

Pregnancy anxiety is normal but should be discussed with your care team if it's overwhelming.

Antenatal depression affects about 10-15% of pregnant women. Symptoms include persistent sadness, loss of interest, and difficulty concentrating.

Support strategies: Talk to your partner, join a pregnancy support group, consider counselling, and don't hesitate to ask for help.

    Sleep and Rest

    • Sleep on your left side from the second trimester
    • Use pregnancy pillows for comfort
    • Aim for 8-10 hours of sleep
    • Take short naps if needed
    • Avoid screens before bedtime

    Common Discomforts and Solutions

Morning sickness: Ginger tea, small frequent meals, vitamin B6 supplements.

Back pain: Pregnancy-safe stretching, warm baths, support belts, prenatal massage.

Swollen feet: Elevate legs, stay hydrated, reduce salt intake, wear comfortable shoes.

Heartburn: Eat smaller meals, avoid spicy food, don't lie down immediately after eating.

    Antenatal Care Schedule

    Regular check-ups are vital:

    • Monthly until 28 weeks
    • Fortnightly from 28-36 weeks
    • Weekly from 36 weeks until delivery

    Preparing for Birth

    • Attend antenatal classes
    • Create a birth plan (but stay flexible)
    • Pack your hospital bag by 36 weeks
    • Know the signs of labour
    • Have your hospital route planned

    A Note on Self-Compassion

Every pregnancy is different. Don't compare yourself to others or to your previous pregnancies. Listen to your body, be kind to yourself, and remember that growing a human being is extraordinary work.
