    What Does an Embryologist Do?

    When most people think of IVF, they picture the doctor. But behind every successful IVF cycle is an embryologist β€” a highly specialised scientist who works with your eggs, sperm, and embryos in the laboratory.

    Who Is an Embryologist?

    An embryologist (also called a clinical embryologist or reproductive biologist) is a scientist trained in handling human gametes (eggs and sperm) and embryos. They typically hold advanced degrees in biology or reproductive science and undergo years of specialised training.

    A Day in the IVF Lab

    Morning: Checking embryos: The day begins by examining all developing embryos under the microscope, recording their progress and quality.

    Egg collection day: When a patient has their egg retrieval, the embryologist receives the follicular fluid and identifies each egg under the microscope. Speed and precision are critical β€” eggs are delicate.

    Sperm preparation: Semen samples are washed and prepared to select the healthiest, most motile sperm.

    Fertilisation: The embryologist either combines sperm with eggs for conventional IVF or performs ICSI β€” injecting a single sperm directly into each mature egg using a microscopic needle.

    Embryo culture: Embryos are placed in specialised incubators that mimic the conditions of the fallopian tube β€” precise temperature, gas mixture, and culture media.

    Daily assessment: Each day, embryos are assessed for development. By Day 3, a good embryo has 6-8 cells. By Day 5, it should be a blastocyst β€” a complex structure of 100+ cells.

    Embryo selection: Using morphological grading (and sometimes time-lapse imaging), the embryologist identifies the best embryo for transfer.

    Vitrification (freezing): Surplus quality embryos are ultra-rapidly frozen for future use, preserved at -196Β°C in liquid nitrogen.

    The ICSI Procedure

    ICSI is perhaps the most technically demanding skill. Using a microscope at 200-400x magnification, the embryologist:

    1. Holds the egg steady with a holding pipette
    2. Selects a single healthy sperm
    3. Immobilises the sperm
    4. Inserts a glass needle thinner than a human hair into the egg
    5. Deposits the sperm inside

    Quality and Safety

    Embryologists maintain meticulous chain-of-custody protocols:

    • Double-witness systems to prevent mix-ups
    • Continuous environmental monitoring
    • Regular equipment calibration
    • Strict quality control procedures
