Fibroids are often found while investigating heavy or painful periods, abdominal swelling, pressure on the bladder, or difficulty conceiving. Some are found on a scan done for another reason.

How fibroids are assessed

Assessment starts with your history and an examination, and ultrasound to map the number, size and position of the fibroids. Blood tests check for anaemia caused by heavy bleeding. Position matters more than size when fertility is the concern.

Treatment options

Not every fibroid needs surgery. Where symptoms are mild, monitoring and medical management of bleeding may be enough. Where fibroids are large, distorting the womb cavity or causing serious symptoms, surgical removal is discussed.
