From the moment you are admitted in labour, a midwife stays with you and your baby's wellbeing is monitored throughout. Your birth preferences are discussed during antenatal visits, so the team already knows your plan when you arrive.

Deciding on a vaginal birth

Whether a vaginal birth is the safer route is a clinical decision reviewed through pregnancy and again in labour. Position of the baby, your medical history, previous births and how labour progresses all influence the plan, and the plan can change safely if it needs to.

Preparing for labour

Antenatal visits cover what to bring, when to come in, how to recognise labour, and how to reach the hospital at night. If you have not booked antenatal care with us yet, that is the first step.

• Know the signs of labour and when to travel
• Keep your antenatal record with you
• Bring your bag once contractions are regular

After your baby is born

Immediately after birth the focus is on skin-to-skin contact, feeding support and checks for you and your baby. Newborn care and neonatal support are available in the same hospital if your baby needs closer observation.
